Verified Reviewer | Narol, ManitobaEngine Blew now Catalytic Converter needs replacement
My 2014 Santa Fe's engine blew due to a recall. I have taken the vehicle back to the dealership multiple times for black exhaust before the engine blew.
Was told to change gas stations. I did with no difference. Had to fight for months to have them replace the engine. Now a year later, the car never stopped blowing black exhaust, and I am being told my catalytic converter is plugged and needs replacing.
I questioned if this is related to the fact my engine was throwing metal pieces due to the recall. I was told absolutely not related.
I am wondering if anyone else is experiencing Cat issues with their Santa fe.
The customer service is disgusting and from what I have read it is everywhere. From Canada to the United States.
The commercial that they bring the WAH is correct. Me crying all the way to the bank to pay for repairs on a poorly made vehicle with a company that doesn't care about their customers.

Verified Reviewer | Washington, District Of ColumbiaHyundai Unresolved Recalls Hold Potential to Harm Life, Limb, Property
I am owner of a 2013 Hyundai Tucson harmed by Hyundais abandonment of responsibility to purchasers of its products.
For months, Hyundai USA Corporates Agent and affiliate dealerships have been unresponsive to consumers with the following hazardous RECALLS:
1) Owners are asked to refrain from garaging their vehicles due to an unresolved recall that warns ABS Brake Leakage may result in spontaneous combustion.
2) As well, an engine block recall indicating potential for engine failure gives consumers extended warranty coverage to ONLY 100,000 Mile limit.
Bottom line, vehicles holding the above listed recalls are essentially TOTALED and STRANDED ASSETS. Middle and lower income households are unable to privately sell vehicles with unresolved recalls.
And, why would a consumer want to execute a trade with a Hyundai dealership for another opportunity to be abused by future unresolved recalls?
Without equivocation, brand loyalty has been destroyed, especially since even used car dealers are unable to hide damage by unresolved recalls.
Consumers have been harmed after Hyundai has received significant investment of buyer financial resources and trust that vehicle design would provide safe conveyance between destinations.
Moreover, at the very least, consumers hold expectations of safety from threats to life and limb due to design flaws as well as safety from the potential of harming others due to catastrophic engine failure while driving in the vicinity of drivers and/or pedestrians unaware of the threat posed by Hyundai vehicles.
Consumers might expect that Loaners until vehicle repairs are fulfilled or vehicle replacement none provided.
- No longer a loyal promoter w positive feedback
- Unresolved recalls results in unsellable stranded assets
Preferred solution: EV Replacement or Compensation for 2013 Hyundai Tucson and months of emotional angst due to jeopardy posed by hazardous recalls to life, limb, property, et al

As recommended by Corporate, I contacted all metro area dealers for a loaner.
No loaners were made available by dealers to accommodate consumers awaiting a remedy for hazardous recalls. Moreover, my Case Manager, Maurice, was not given the authority to afford consumers a preset authorization for a loaner until a remedy is determined.

Verified Reviewer | Pendleton, OregonSEIZED ENGINE
I purchased my 2019 Hyundai Tucson 2 years ago with 50k miles on it. After owning it for a month the car began to make a ticking noise, I contacted Hyundai and the dealership to get this fixed (that should have been my warning sign that my car would fail again if it was this brand new) When I took it to Hyundai it took about a month in a half to get the "issue" resolved and luckily since this was their issue my rental car was covered through Hyundai themselves. Fast forward to 1 year and 11 months later, I regularly get oil changes on my car along with any other general maintenance that needs to be done. Now to begin the horrifying experience I had to encounter with my three children along my side.
On a HOT summer night (**cough ** two nights ago) we were driving back home on an interstate about 3 hours away with the beautiful Oregon ugly heat blazing at 98 degrees at 10 o clock at night, I began to ponder how peaceful the night seemed, HA little did I know as I am climbing through the mountains on the interstate my car began to make a loud clunking noise (NO DASHBOARD LIGHTS ON NOTHING WARNING THERE IS AN ISSUE) as I roll down the window to hear what the *** was going on I feel my car give LITTLE power to go so I immediately pull my car off to the shoulder start panicking thinking I am in the middle of no where it is 98 degrees out what the *** is going on with my car. As I got to the shoulder all the dashboard lights came on and right then and there I knew I was screwed. I immediately grab my phone to see if I have cell service, well thank goodness someone in heaven was watching over us and I immediately call family thinking what the *** am i going to do. I have never in my life been broken down in a car I own let alone in the heat, let alone again in a new car. I my level of anxiety continues to reach its boiling point I contact local authorities to come out and at least assist us with coverage while myself and 3 kids are on the side of the interstate.
I began to attempt to turn the key over after I turned the vehicle off and let it sit for a min and nothing turned, lights were on but nothing was sending any signal to the engine to start. My children and I luckily got a hotel nearby in the town we were near that I had to pay out of MY POCKET. I did have towing with my insurance but if anyone knows about insurance it only tows you to the nearest mechanic shop well I did not want that since this was just the beginning of a Hyundai issue and if a third party touches your car it cancels any warranties.. So I sat in my hotel room until my family was able to drive from the other side of me 4 hours away to bring a tow hitch and drive me the rest of the 3 hours home.
My mechanical family member checked the dip stick of the oil and stated it was bone dry. Remind you I have a receipt from my last oil change and my oil was due for a change (not overdue at all). So as we sat there wondering what the *** why was it bone dry, NO OIL LEAKS, OIL PLUG was in place, so that left with us thinking okay something else is going on, your car should NEVER burn through oil that fast especially being a new car. As my uncle looked online at reviews there was a review that had the SAME similar story as me, everything she described was almost to the T of what happened to my family.
As i began to look up the nearest Hyundai to see if there was a recall on my engine I get a hold of a location gave them my VIN and they in fact told me there is an extended warranty for something along with the engine, I am no mechanic nor do I know any terminology for anything with a car other than GAS, OIL, BRAKES, TIRES, SPARK PLUGS! They informed me I would need to take it in to get a full diagnostic testing done on it to determine the issue. I contacted my local Hyundai location to let them know what happened and that the other location informed me to contact them to start the process.
Here is where it gets even more frustrating, since Hyundai has billions of dollar class act settlement claims for everything under the sun both hyundai locations are backed up with 80+ cars, that my appointment just for the diagnostic running is not for about 2 months ago. well at this point I can drive my car so I dropped it off at the location they informed if they could get to it sooner they would and at that point when it does get the diagnostic ran and sent to hyundai they would then place me in a loaner car but could not until then, Do you have any idea how frustrating this is for anyone who has NO FAMILY near but 7 hours away. Hyundai expects me to pay for a rental until they can process? How does this even make sense, this is complete *** and sounds like another class act settlement . I have been advised by MULTIPLE people at dealerships to STAY AWAY from HYUNDAI'S, DO NOT PURCHASE DO NOT SETTLE FOR THEIR JUNK CARS! Mechanical issues is the #1 failure in their cars. Remind you a newer car should NEVER burn through oil that much let alone not have any warning signs...my dashboard never ever alerted me of any issues, NOTHING CAME ON! HYUNDAI needs to get this *** together and stop making cars that are junk. My beautiful drive back home quickly turned into a nightmare, I won't even bother your time telling you about everything else that I had to encounter on my way home with my car hitched on a trailer towing it back! I am telling you all, TERRIBLE TERRIBLE MECHANICAL ISSUES and if you are okay without having a car for 2+ months sure buy a cheap hyundai!

My santa fe had less then 100000 km on it brand new tires and brakes and trailer hatch hot and cold seats, bug deflector, auto hitch ,I did not expect my vehicle to go on fire destroying christmas presents and clothes with a burnt plastic smell in them . I would like to tell know if there is anything that hyundai can do to compensate on my time and stress with this matter.

Oil Burning Hyundai Tucson
We own a 2017 Hyundai Tuscon with the 2.0 litre engine thats been burning oil they told us we have 200,000 km Warranty on the engine as they know the engines are junk we had it in for oil consumption test and they told us that it has to burn 1 litre of oil per 1000km before they will do anything which is another unbelievable statement so fast forward to now we took it to dealer and they first said there was a miss fire so needed plugs so I finally agreed so they put plugs in and he called back and said that didnt work it was the catalytic converter was plugged they knew that they just wanted to rip us off for another $170 dollars out of us they are a bunch of CROOKS so now the dealership told me he they will send in a request for new exhaust system that cost $3000 and if Hyundai wouldnt pay we would have to.I couldnt believe what I was hearing told him this is insanity so now its sitting at dealership waiting to here from Hyundai Canada it obvious they dont give 2 *** about their customers so PLEASE stay as far away from Hyundai as possible. Also read where these vehicles can start on fire due to bearing overheating in the enginejust think of all the little children riding around in these death traps

Verified Reviewer | Salt Lake City, Utah2017 Hyundai Elantra is a lemon
In October 2016 I bought a new new 2017 Hyundai Elantra from Ken Garff Hyundai in Salt Lake City, UT. I am the original owner and the car had 27 miles on it when I drove it off the lot.
Since then I have had multiple problems with it that make it clear that I was sold a completely defective vehicle.
First, the transmission went out in February 2018 and had to be replaced. How is it even possible for the transmission to go out on a car that is barely over a year old?
Then since May of 2022 I've had multiple problems with the steering, brakes, and engine, many of which the service center dismissed as "we can't replicate the problem, so there's nothing wrong with it." In July of 2022 I had to practically beg the service manager to diagnose the car after it started shaking when stopped and the check engine light was turning on and off. This was a genuine safety concern for me that I felt was dismissed; eventually, a problem with the cylinders was found and repaired at a cost of nearly $800.
Then in January 2023 I began having problems starting the car (taking multiple attempts to start as the engine was not turning over fully), as well as with it shaking when driving and struggling to shift, especially when going up hills. I tried to make an appointment for this but had to schedule about 2 weeks out.
While I was waiting for that appointment, the car just wouldn't start at all. This happened on January 16, 2023 and I had to have it towed to the service center. It took a week for them to figure out what was wrong with it and tell me that a complete engine replacement was needed, and then to determine that it was under warranty, during which I had to pay out of pocket for a rental car (which I still have not been reimbursed for). I am self-employed as a therapist in private practice and if I don't go into work and see clients, I don't get paid, so this situation with my car has been detrimental to my business and income.
Finally on Friday January 20th the service center told me that the engine needed to be replaced and it was under warranty, but there would not be a service loaner available until Monday January 23rd.
When I did go in that day to pick up the service loaner I was told it would only take about 20 minutes but I was there closer to an hour and was late to my appointment with a client.
I also didn't appreciate being given a service loaner with no snow tires in the middle of winter in Utah, which led to some very scary situations while driving.
Then on February 23rd (well over a month since the car was towed in) I received a text and voicemail from the dealership stating that the engine replacement was in progress and it was recommended to also do a transmission flush, brake fluid flush, fuel injection cleaning, and to flush the rear differential and transfer case for the wheel drive system, at a total cost of $610.
From my perspective, all of that work should just have been included as part of the warranty work if it's recommended when the engine is replaced. After waiting over a month for my car to be repaired and paying over $400 out of pocket for a rental car so that I can keep going to work and not lose income, being told I need to pay $610 extra for repairs on this defective car Hyundai/Ken Garff sold me was a slap in the face.
And now, to make all of that worse, after picking it up at the service center yesterday (February 25th), it is STILL not starting properly, as described above.
So basically, my car was at Ken Garff Hyundai service center in downtown Salt Lake City from 1/16/23 - 2/25/23. The car was towed to the dealership because it would not start, and the engine was replaced...but the problem with the car is STILL not fixed. It took multiple attempts to start it this morning--on the first try, the engine did not fully turn over and the dashboard warning lights were on, which was one of the exact problems I was having shortly before it just wouldn't start at all.
This is the worst experience I've ever had with a car and with an automotive service center.
I've been a Hyundai customer since 2004, but over the years the quality of their cars seems to have declined horribly, and the customer service has gone way downhill.
After this experience, I'm done. Everything about it has been completely unacceptable.
Since Hyundai sold me a lemon, I would like a refund for the entire purchase price of this car, plus all the money I've spent on repairs.
Preferred solution: Full refund
